Although Online, Hybrid, Flex, and Online Live courses offer greater convenience and flexibility than traditional classes, they demand more dedication and time-management skills. These course options are ideal for highly motivated learners who need flexible schedules to balance family, work, and school. The information below can help you determine if online courses are right for you.

Fewer Classes Does Not Mean Less Work

In online courses, the time usually spent in a classroom is dedicated to online work. In hybrid courses, which combine in-person and online learning, expect to spend significantly more out-of-class time on coursework than in traditional face-to-face classes.

Time Management Skills

Strong time management skills are essential for success in online classes. Note that online assignments at WilmU are aligned with Eastern Time (ET).

Take Responsibility for Your Own Learning

In online courses, you are responsible for managing your learning outside the classroom. These courses emphasize activities that require student participation and responsiveness.

Technology Skills

Online courses require a good level of technological proficiency. You should be comfortable using a computer and the Internet (websites, email, search, etc.) and be prepared to learn new technologies and online research methods. Also see Technology Requirements below.

Please note that all courses at Wilmington University, including those held on campus, are web-enhanced and utilize a learning management system called Canvas. Students can expect to use Canvas for online activities in every course throughout their studies. Therefore, regular access to a computer and the Internet is essential. Computers are available for student use at Wilmington University locations.

Tips for Success in Online, Hybrid, or Flex Courses

• Prepare Mentally: Purchase the textbook and course materials early, and review them thoroughly.
• Read the Syllabus: Go through the entire syllabus before the first class session.
• Complete the Online Course Orientation: Familiarize yourself with the online course platform.
• Stay Organized: Avoid procrastination by creating a calendar or planner based on the syllabus.
• Set a Schedule: Dedicate specific times each week for your course and stick to it.
• Gather Research Early: If a paper is due, collect all necessary information well in advance.
• Practice Discipline: Follow your schedule, but prioritize self-care when needed.
• Develop Computer Skills: Use resources like Khan Academy or YouTube to enhance your skills.
• Ask for Help Promptly: Don’t hesitate to seek assistance if you need it.
• Stay Connected: Maintain communication with your instructor and classmates.
• Check Canvas Daily: Log in regularly for updates and assignments.

• Webcam (external or built-in)

Internet Access

• Internet Connection: A reliable broadband connection is required. Speeds of at least 10 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload are recommended for Canvas, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Respondus Monitor, Kaltura, and other Educational Technology Tools. Higher speeds may be needed for video conferencing and media-rich coursework. 

Computer Hardware

Students should have regular access to a Windows or Mac desktop or laptop computer that meets the requirements below.

• Operating System: 
  
  • Windows 11 (Windows 10 remains supported on some devices but is nearing end of support)
  • macOS 13 Ventura or higher
  • Devices must be capable of running the latest supported web browsers and required course software.
• Hard Drive: At least 100 GB of available storage space is recommended for course files, software, and media recordings.  
• Memory/RAM: 8 GB RAM minimum; 16 GB recommended for video recording, multitasking, and specialty software.
• Mobile Devices: Smartphones and tablets can be useful for viewing course content, but they should not be relied upon as a primary device for completing coursework.

Software

• Web Browser: Use the most recent version of Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. Unsupported or outdated browsers may cause issues with course activities. See Web Browser and Loading Issues with Canvas.
• Word Processor: Microsoft Word. Assignments and essays must be uploaded as Microsoft Word documents (.doc or .docx).

To help students meet the requirements above, Wilmington University offers:

• Purchasing programs for students to buy computer hardware, software, and accessories at an educational discount.
• Microsoft Office 365 at no cost for enrolled students to download and install on personal devices.
• Online Software Access - enrolled students can access a virtual computer at no cost to use specialty software required for certain courses, such as Adobe Creative Suite or statistical analysis software.
